Roman Republican Coins from the Ahala Collection, May 2013, PART 3, RRC 301 to RRC 546Roman Republican Coins from the Ahala Collection, May 2013, PART 1, RRC 1 to RRC 100 Roman Republican Coins from the Ahala Collection, May 2013, PART 2, RRC 101 to RRC 300 The following coins, from my personal collection, will soon be owned by other collectors. I am reducing the size of my coin collection. In some cases I have two coins of the same type, and one must go. In other cases these are the only examples of a coin I ever owned, but to reduce space and to make my collection easier to manage, it is time for me to let go of them and let others have the pleasure of owning them. Many rare and unusual coins are included. I though to make a web-page so that I can comment on them, and explain what is important and interesting about them, in memory of some very special coins.M. From the Andrew McCabe Collection; Ex Vecchi 3, 13 September 1996. An extremely rare and important type; the bronzes of about 100 BC are all very rare, and despite the drilling on the obverse this is one of the better of the few known examples. Only a single example on acsearch, that of the RBW collection, and none were offered for sale between this in 1996 and the RBW coin in 2012. If you pass on this example, another may not appear for decades. D Junius L. f. Silanus AR Denarius. Rome, 91 BC. From the Andrew McCabe Collection. A rostral column has the prows of captured ships and other naval booty attached to its sides; this one evidently commemorates Actium and has Octavian atop. Aside from the Actium column, another, and perhaps the prototype, was the Columna Rostrata C. Duilii ("Rostral Column of Gaius Duilius"), celebrating the naval Battle of Mylae (260 BC); formerly in the Roman Forum, some remnants of the inscription are now in the Capitoline Museum. A better known modern example is that in Columbus Circle in New York, see below, paired with another in St.Petersburg.
