Ancient Coin Auction Catalogues before 1970
This web-page is organised around John Spring's book, Ancient Coin Auction Catalogues 1880-1980.
Spring's book is is, at the same time, a catalogue of auction
sales of ancient coins, an history of private collections,
a set of biographies of the collectors themselves, and a history of the auction houses and their proprietors since the late 19th century.
As well as full reviews of some 900 auction catalogues,
with appropriate indexing and best-of lists, there are biographies of dozens of collectors and proprietors often including
atmospheric photographs. As an example there is a full page devoted to the
opera singer Enrico Caruso and his collection, and a photo of the excavations at Knossos used to illustrate the 1926 Ars Classica
sale of Sir Arther Evans’ collection. Many of the photos were taken by John Spring, who has an expert eye for
capturing a 1920s street scene in today's cities, evoking the world where Ratto, Cahn, Bourgey and other famous names sold coins
one could hardly dream of today, always illustrated with crisp photos of expertly made plaster casts. Hardback, large format, high quality paper.
Here is a sample page that is illustrative of the style.
This webpage takes an specialised look at those sales featuring Roman Republican coins listed in John Spring's catalogue.
I have taken a cut off date of 1970 for the auctions featured on this page for two reasons. First, the format of auction catologues changed from
the 1960s onwards. Catalogues from before the 1960s were illustrated with very high quality plaster cast photographs. The high cost of these photographs had two
implications for the quality of the catalogues. They caused the auctioneers to select the very best coins for photography, which meant that any one
plate illustrated coins of a concentrated quality that one would hardly see on a single page today. For the same reasons, the catalogues themselves
were made to very high production standards, sometimes including the plates as loose large-size photographs in a separate sleeve, and often with
high quality covers sometimes including commissioned art work. The plates themselves usually had a matte finish that brought out the best in the coins.
The catalogues were deluxe items, and looked and felt that way, as well as commanding high prices at
the time they were published. Today very few catalogues are made to such a standard, perhaps those of Numismatica Ars Classica being an exception.
From about 1970 there was a move to photographing every coin regardless of low quality. To save costs the
coins were photographed directly rather than making plaster casts, and text and coin photos are now printed together, often on a glossy paper
that is an unsatisfactory compromise for both text and photographs. Good catalogues have sometimes been produced in the modern era, but they will be
the subject of a separate
web-page that focuses on modern ancient coin catalogues. This webpage focuses on the era of the greatest auction catalogues prior to 1970.
A second reason for choosing 1970 is the thorny matter of cultural property, that places a premium, for collecting purposes, on those antiquities
that can be demonstrated to have been in collections, public or private, prior to the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and
Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The offering of an antiquity, including ancient coins,
in any well-publicised auction prior to 1970, or the publication of an item in a book prior to that date,
is often a threshold condition for an item being acceptable for museum acquisition. For example the British Museum's policy states
"The Museum will normally only acquire those archaeological and heritage objects that have documentation to show a legal history back to
November 14th 1970 (the date of the UNESCO Convention)". Whilst a private collector may not place such importance on demonstrating very old
provenance, there is without doubt a significant premium in the collecting market for items with good documentation prior to 1970. There is a
sense that such items are safeguarded, both in terms of allowing free sale and free movement between countries, and from any
appreciable risk of a future claim by a source country. There are no absolutes in this matter; Italy purports to claim items not documented
before 1909, and Greece still seeks the Parthenon Marbles, purchased by Lord Elgin from the Ottomans, the then governing power in Greece, in 1801.
Outside these claims, the first not generally recognised outside the claimant country, and the second more a political debate than a question
of legal ownership, 1970 is generally recognised as the guiding date. There is
a premium on coins that show older provenance. The aim of this web page is to help collectors find these old provenance matches, by
explaining in detail the contents of each catalogue, and to guide collectors and researchers in the assembly of a library relevant to
Roman Republican coinage.
I compiled this
web-page over the course of a week in one of the world's best private numismatic libraries, that of the collector of Roman Republican coins, RBW,
the book of whose collection, shown below, has now become a standard reference.
I would like to express my thanks RBW for the tremendous
assistance that he has given me, not only in assembling this web-page, and in helping me source key Roman Republican catalogues, through
advice and from among his duplicates, but also for the support he has given over the years for
Roman Republican numismatics, guiding scholars, supporting research work, and through bringing his collection to our attention, enjoyment and learning
in this publication that was supported by the auctioneer for sales NAC61 and NAC63, Numismatica Ars Classica, and by the Russo family.
Auction Catalogues, Rare Coins, and Old Provenances
So how do we know which catalogues are any good? The most straightforward way to evaluate an auction catalogue is by listing the number of plates for each
category of ancient coin. Spring takes this approach. He summarises his findings in tables at the end of his book that
list those catalogues having the greatest number of plates in each category, including Aes Grave, and struck Roman
Republican coins. He addresses quality by discussing the more significant catalogues in the main text, sometimes with the aid of
contemporary or later commentary that casts light on the collection or the collector. For the top dozen or so catalogues, such an
approach suffices. Spring tells us what is really important.
A serious collector should aim, in time, to find copies of those really important sales.
But there are many other important sales outside the top dozen or so. Some of the most important sales have just a few plates but of
exceptionally good or important coins. I have listed about one hundred important sales on this page.
To evaluate the quality of each sale
I have described what rare coins you can see illustrated on the plates of each. I wish to do this in a consistent manner, so I have taken
Sydenham's Coinage of the Roman Republic and, for each catalogue, I have listed all the illustrated rarities that he assigns
as R6 (rare) through R9/R10 (exceedingly rare).
The nature and extent of these illustrated rarities then becomes a marker for the quality of a catalogue, to be considered alongside
numerical indicators such as the number of plates and coins illustrated.
Some rarities are so hard to come by that even good quality collections rarely have more than a few. Great collections
will have many of the lesser rarities, and also the occasional exceedingly rare type that might appear at auction only once every few years or decade.
As an example, below is a plate of Roman Republican coins, gold, silver and bronze, from the Bartolemeo Borghesi collection, sale of
Thursday 31st March 1881 by Raffaele Dura in Rome, catalogued by Giulio Sambon. It's just a single plate of Republican
coins but, my, what a plate!
The photographic plate is of very high quality - indeed Spring suggests this may be the first ever photographically plated ancient coin catalogue -
but the coins are unsurpassable. The sole bronze is perhaps the finest Pan Ceres Titia quadrans known. The gold includes both the stater
and half stater of the second Punic war oath scene series, whilst the Mars Eagle type is the exceedingly rare forty asses, marked XXXX.
Rarer than all these is the Hercules Eagle on thunderbolt aureus of CN.LENTVL, Crawford RRC 548/1.
The silver includes one of the greatest rarities of the Republican series, the Sextus Pompey and Nasidius denarius with four galleys on the
reverse. When this type last appeared at auction at NAC59 April 2011, NAC wrote
"Of the highest rarity, only the sixth specimen known and the only one in private hands. Among the rarest issues of the whole
Republican series missing in all the major collections." Of course at the time of the Borghesi sale the illustrated coin was then in private
hands; it now resides in the Capitoline museum. The other silver types are splendid examples of denarii of Caius Antony, of Brutus' EID MAR
portrait type with cap of liberty and daggers, and a much rarer Brutus type with trophy. To add cream on top, the two Imperial era coins
ilustrated are Trajanic restitutions of Roman Republican coins. The catalogue itself has many hundreds of other Roman Republican coins
described in detail and has an introduction by Giulio Sambon. This is a top class ancient coin auction catalogue, but one would hardly know
from a description that just noted its single plate of Republican coins.
In assembling the checklist of rarities used for evaluating these catalogues, I have generally followed Sydenham,
an assessment actually carried out by Charles Hersh when editing the manuscript for publication after the former's death.
The coin types which Sydenham assigns R6 through R9/R10 are listed at the bottom of
this web-page. I have made
a few alterations to the rarity assessment as published in his 1952 book, The Coinage of the Roman Republic. For coins that have become signicantly more common due to new finds, I've adjusted the
rating accordingly. For example, the denarius of Cassius with tripod on the reverse is no longer very rare. Likewise when I know for a fact
that a coin type has hardly ever appeared at auction in recent decades, I've increased its rarity assessment. Some early
denarius types may have been seen a little more frequently by Hersh due to his greater exposure to Italian material, but we now know that
e.g. the denarius type with Meta, and the victoriatus and quinarius types from Corcyra are essentially missing from the auction records.
Indeed the Meta denarius one of the rarest silver coins in the entire Roman Republican series.
The third adjustment I've made is that I list bronzes only
where the largest denominations: typically the As, but occasionally Dupondius or Dextans, are known to be very rare or are sought after,
or if all the denominations in a series are very rare, or where bronzes have non-standard, i.e. not prow types.
Hence the checklist below does not include rare struck prow-type bronze fractions from series that otherwise include commoner types.
For the rarity of struck bronzes not listed here, see my specialist page on the
Rarity of Roman Republican Struck Bronzes,
http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/RomanRepublicBronzeRarities.html
A brief comment is also in order regarding the apparent prevalence of such rare coins in all the auction catalogues I list. Are
they really so rare? What happens with these types is that due their rarity even lower quality examples get funnelled into the
high end sales venues, the coins types are well known, and if one appears at a low end venue, perhaps the first time the coin has
appeared at market, it'll be noticed quickly and its next appearance will be at a higher class auction.
Because of this funneling, these coins appear more often than might be expected in good auctions. Sometimes the same actual coin appears
in different sales in sequence. A classic example is the Mars Eagle pentagram sixty as piece, which is listed several times on this web-page.
In each case the listing refers to the same actual coin, consecutively sold in the Borghesi, Montagu, O'Hagan, Caruso, Martini, Evans, Voirol,
Moretti and RBW sales.
The definition of "rarity"
is also a flexible concept that addresses the unobtainability of coins from the perspective who would want an example,
rather than the absolute numbers of the type.
For example Brutus' EID MAR is known in many specimens, in fact over one hundred, but it just cannot be got by ordinary collectors, as it is priced above the top
range of even the most desirable Roman Republican coin. Rarity thus combines desirability with unobtainability, and is not a statistical measure.
Since I do not list every coin illustrated, but only rarities, it is reasonable to ask whether the rarities are a fair analogue for the quality
and extent of the other illustrated coins. By default you may assume they are an analogue for the other illustrated coins. If they are not, then
I would provide a relevant comment. For example if I list only Imperatorial era rarities, I may add a comment that there are also fine coins
from earlier eras. If I made no such comment, then you may reasonably assume that most of the other illustrated coins are also Imperatorial.
Lacking any special comment, the coins which I choose to list are usually analogous to those not listed in quality and era.
I also make no explicit comment where I choose not to list a catalogue.
Of course I have not seen or reviewed every good catalogue, but I hope that the quality and coverage of the RBW library is such that
I will have reviewed most high quality catalogues that illustrate
at least one full plate of good Roman Republican coins. It is therefore reasonable to assume that if I list an auction house but I omit a certain catalogue,
then that catalogue probably contains less than a plate of good Roman Republican coins, or perhaps contains greater numbers of less
interesting coins. That said, I will certainly have missed some important sales. So I invite anyone with a pre-1970 catalogue that contains at least
one full plate of rarer high quality Republican coins to contact me with details and a review in the below format.
I didn't take pictures of the library shelves when in the RBW library, but a while back BCD hosted a visit to his library in Athens.
The pictures below give a taste of an ideal elegant and practical numismatic library; in fact that of BCD may have the most complete
assembly of auction catalogues for the vast area of Greek coins; that of RBW has a superb library for the more focused area of Roman Republican coinage.
Listing of pre-1970 Catalogues having good quality Roman Republican coinage
With the preamble done, it's now appropriate to list the auction catalogues that I have reviewed. I list each sale in the Spring order, which
is alphabetical by auction house, and then chronologically by auction.
I have interleaved some good fixed price lists, whose scope is not included in Spring. For each catalogue I have mentioned the overall number of ancient
coins listed and the overall number of plates. I then list the number of Roman Republican coins actually illustrated, and I follow with
a description of the aes grave, bronze, silver and gold rarities that are illustrated on the plates. This is done in a very abbreviated manner.
For example "Dream of Sulla 480" refers to the denarius type Crawford RRC 480/1 issued by Lucius Aemilius Buca with Venus on obverse, and a scene that may represent the Dream
of Sulla on the reverse. "Cassius branch 505" refers to either the aureus type RRC 505/1, or the denarius type RRC 505/2, that features Liberty
on the obverse and an aplustre or branch on the reverse. Experienced collectors will probably recognise these shorthand codes that I use for each type,
but in case of doubt the list of rare Roman Republican coins at the bottom of this web-page can be consulted.
The catalogue inventory count, both of listed and illustrated Republican coins, is in each case an estimate. Due to the habit of mixing
later Augustus with earlier Octavian it is difficult to estimate at which lot numbers the Republican listings end. I have endeavoured to exclude
Augustan issues from the numbers. The latest Republican coin in my count is thus the aureus of Octavian-Augustus with
eagle, wreath and laurel leaves.
In cases where Republican provincial issues or social war coins are mixed with the Republican listings these are included in the count,
as are Italian Aes Grave, all these being essentially Republican in nature. In some cases Trajanic restitutions are listed in the Consular
family name categories and are thus included by default, although these are so rare as to make little impact on numbers, and are
anyways interesting to collectors of Republican coins.
In every
case where the originating collector is known to me, I include his name. For single collector sales, and sales where the consignments are arranged
per collector, it may be possible to trace pedigrees further back in time, through acquisition records for that collector.
Sometimes hand annotations on earlier sales indicate who purchased a coin that
may not be illustrated. A conscientious researcher can by these means establish longer chains of provenance. A list of collectors and their
sales can be found on the

from the other collections. Thirty six illustrated Social War coins, a key signal of completeness. The 1200 or so illustrations cover
just a third of the Haeberlin collection, being the most important coins. The full collection of 3300 coins is listed with weights,
allowing other ex Haeberlin coins to be confirmed. The arrangement is chronological although evolving research means that
not all coins will be found where expected. This has an even higher proportion of silver rarities than Benz, Leu 17 or Martini,
missing only some sporadic early coins with symbols, often the Achilles heel of even the best collections.

Spring 548 Rodolfo Ratto 24 Feb 1930
- Collection Joseph MARTINI
- 1697 lots 40 plates. Martini covers the entire corpus including silver, aes grave, struck bronzes and gold, with notable rarities
in all metals. Excellent plates, bright and clear, loose-leaf on good quality paper, very much nice than those of Haeberlin, and seemingly
from plaster casts. About 800 coins illustrated out of 1670 catalogued. Martini has good coverage of bronze, many of these in excellent
condition perhaps typical of the quality of the very best NFA catalogues. Slightly fewer landmarks rarities than Haeberlin (albeit difficult
to check as it is arranged by Babelon), still it includes quite a few rare Imperatorial gold, Cornufucius, Numitoria, Murcus and other notables.
The all-metal coverage, the high quality of the coins and illustrations, and the rarities mark this out as a first rate collection.
As with Quadras y Ramon and Bonazzi I have not yet inventorised the Martini collection. This, the sale with his finest coins, is not to be
confused with Spring 5, Baranowsky 25 Feb 1931, a lesser although still important sale. I illustrate below a double page aes grave plate
from this sale.

SANGIORGI
Spring 628 Sangiorgi 19 Jan 1893
- Collection Bartolomeo BORGHESI
- 1587 lots with some illustrations in text
- RR 45 illustrated in text incl. some restitution issues. 1526 RR listed. No weights. Mostly EF. Illustrations include
many celebrated rarities known only in a few specimens, some acquired by the Capitoline museum.
As explained in the introduction by Gnecchi, the scope of this sale is the same as
for the Dura / Sambon 1881 sale, Spring 595. Some of the in-text illustrations include the same coins e.g. the Pompey Nasidia four galleys 483.
At the 1881 auction, the sale of individual lots was pre-empted by a block bid for the entire collection which was accepted by the consignors,
presumably Borghesi's heirs (he died 1860). The sale of the coins in individual lots is recorded here, my review copy containing realised
prices. The Nasidia four galleys type sold for 590 lire, about £25, at the top end for Republican denarii in 19th century catalogues. Very likely
the consigner thus made a substantial profit on his 1881 block purchase.

SOTHEBY
(not in Spring) S.Leigh Sotheby 30 May 1842
- Greek and Roman coins the property of the late Reverend G.F.NOTT D.D. the principle feature being a very complete and
remarkably fine series of ROMAN CONSULAR COINS
- 1375 lots, no illustrations, hand-priced with buyers' names
- RR approx. 1000 lots, many in groups, aes grave, bronze, silver and gold. The title page and conditions are an interesting comparison
to today's, not that different in many aspects but the reference work for Roman Republican was Havercamp 1843 (not, interestingly, Echkel).
The coins are hand priced in pounds shillings and pence. The buyer's names at right would in many cases be dealers, who often had traditional
names that they operated under. For example, the name Cureton was taken up by Baldwin's,
founded in 1872, as its auction pen-name. In this case Cureton's name, which appears throughout this sale, likely
referred to the original H.O. Cureton, a coin dealer in the early 19th century. It was not usual for collectors to attend sales, but rather
to buy at retail from attending bidders. Most lots consisted of large groups and bidding was
often slow as the lots were inspected in the course of bidding. The Nott sale took nine days to sell 1371 lots. Boyne was
an active bidder one year before his own sale (next listing).
(not in Spring) S.Leigh Sotheby 19 Jul 1843
- Collection Robert BOYNE including a very fine series of Consular and Imperial Roman Silver Coins
- 548 lots, no illustrations, hand-priced with buyer's names
- RR approx. 100 lots some in groups, all silver. The title page of this annotated copy shows at least one buyer didn't much
like the Boyne collection and showed so with some humour by carefully amending "A VERY FINE SERIES ... OF COINS" to "A VERY INDIFFERENT
SERIES ... of DVPLICATE COINS", duplicate in this instance probably meaning fake! Numismatists of this era were less bound by modern serious scholarly
conventions. My favourite mid 19th century book on Republican coins, Smyth's catalogue of the Northumberland collection, has little wry
jokes at every page turn. Perhaps Smyth was the bidder for Northumberland at this sale.

Rarity Estimates for Roman Republican Coins
When describing rarities in words, R6 is considered "Rare", R7 is considered "Very Rare", R8 is considered "Extremely Rare",
and R9 or R10 are considered "Exceedingly Rare". There is no practical difference between the absolute unobtainability of R9 and
the absolute unobtainability 10, and I have shown both in the list as R9. Absent from this list are rare bronze fractions with prow
reverses. This is explained in the introduction. A full list of such bronze rarities can be found on:
